An update on some of the Welfare work that Guantanamo Justice centre has under taken to date.
We have contacted several ex-Guantanamo prisoners to make them aware of
GJC .Through this contact we have assessed many cases where people are in urgent need of support. From the East as far as Pakistan, to the West as far as Morocco.
1- In Pakistan the wife of a Guantanamo prisoner has had to fend for her self and her five children. She is unable to work for medical reasons. She and her children face daily discrimination for being the wife of an ex-Guantanamo prisoner.
2- Sami El-haj travelled to Algeria in 2009 to meet the ex-prisoners of Guantanamo there, and to seek to assist them and provide them with financial support. He also sought to mediate with government departments there, in facilitating their return to their homeland.
3- An ex- guantanamo prisoner in Jordan desperately needed surgery to correct an eye problem. GJC in conjunction with another organisation, was able to provide funding for laser surgery. He had an operation to correct his eyesight, and he is now able to work and provide for himself and his family.
4- We have helped an ex-prisoner in Chad with his reintegration by paying
his rent and daily expenses. And we are now raising funds to help in furthering his education. He was kidnapped and incarcerated at the Guantanamo camp at the very young age of 14.
5- A young man who was held in the Guantanamo camp for 6 years, who was released without any charges against him, was imprisoned on return to his homeland. His family lived in another city and were unable to afford to visit him regularly, causing great distress to him and them, after so many years of being forcibly kept apart. GJC was able to relocate his family to the city where he is being held, so they are now able to visit him on a daily basis, and we pray for, and continue to work for his release.
6- In Egypt, one former Guantanmo prisoner is wheelchair bound, after his back was broken by six American soldiers whilst he was in a hospital waiting room. GJC is seeking to get him a new wheelchair, and the medical assistance he desperately needs.
7- Ahmad Abdulahad was one of several Uighurs unlawfully detained in Guantanamo bay in 2002. He is a transtibial amputee whose leg was amputated shortly after arriving at the detention facility. With his current prosthetic limb he can barely stand for fifteen minutes. Funds were recently raised to replace his prosthetic leg with the best that is available. please read the full story here
