This is an Emergency

Shaker Aamer

Speakers, politicians, journalists and concerned members of the public gathered yesterday in London, to call for the release of British Resident Shaker Aamer. Around 300 people gathered at a public meeting at Battersea Arts Centre, where Shaker`s UK lawer Gareth Pierce called everyone to take note that "This Is an Emergency" and indeed it is.

In Shaker`s own words from a letter written in 2006 the last time anything was heard from him in Guantanamo

" I am slowly dying here everyday, mentally and physically. This is happening to all of us. We have been ignored, locked up for many years.. I have problems, many problems from the filthy yellow water.. I have lung problems from the chemicals they spread on the floor.. I am already athritic at the age of 40 because i sleep on a steel bed and they use freezing air conditioning as part of interrogation process. I have ruined eyesight from the permenant 24 hour flurescent lights. I have tinnitus in my ears from the perpetual noise.. I have ulcers and constipation from the food. I have been made paranoid i trust nobody not even my lawyer "

Ray Silk of the campaign said:

"We want to publicise the terrible plight of Shaker Aamer. He has been incarcerated for nearly nine years in Guantanamo Bay. He has not been charged with anything or brought to trial. We are calling upon the UK and US Governments to make arrangements as soon as possible for his release."

The situation is becoming more serious by the day, a recent article written by infamous US lawyer, korean born John Yoo, falsely claimed this week of the men currently held in Guantanamo that:

" all were leaders, fighters or organizers for al Qaeda, the Taliban or other jihadist groups. None was judged innocent. "

Seems Mr.Yoo has sat as judge and jury on his latest propaganda spree, yet the reality is that no charges have been put to the majority of the prisoners still held in Guantanamo, many of them including Shaker Aamer were long ago cleared for release by the US administration.

For the handful who have been charged, it is well documented that they were charged with allegations that they were tortured to take the blame for, one man was almost drowned to death more than 186 times, usuing a partial drowning technique that originated in medieval torture chambers.

The blatant injustice that the world has seen used by the US forces and the US administration time and time again, leaves anyone who still beleived that the rule of law was upheld in this "free" "democratic" society, and that one is "innocent until proven guilty" without any doubt that the US is not what it claims to be, and it does not in anyway uphold the justice it espouses as part of its constitution.

If one needs any further proof of the demise of US justice how about the shocking continued assasinations of individuals by bombing campaigns carried out by drones of those susected of potential crime by the US. If that isnt enough, then the fact that the US Congress voted this week to de-fund any effort to shut down Guantanamo should rouse any sane mind that the procurers of torture and opression want to continue the inhumanity they have thus far inflicted upon so many innocent muslims. Congress has even barred the US Justice Department from having any Guantanamo Detainees tried in american courts on the US mainland despite the request of US attorney general to do so.

Indeed This Is An Emergency, the door to Shakers freedom is limited more and more with everyday that passes, as America moves towards a total anihilation of any justice for the muslims held in Bagram and Guantanamo.
