Government Report on Drugging of Detainees Is Suppressed

A major Department of Defense Office of the Inspector General (OIG) investigation on the drugging of detainees held at Guantanamo and other Department of Defense (DoD) facilities was completed almost a year ago and shared with a key Senate committee. But the investigation did not receive any media attention at the time likely due to the fact that the report was classified. News of the completion of the investigation and the report came as a surprise to human rights workers who had been involved in investigating the drugging claims. According to DoD spokesperson, Maj. Tanya Bradsher, the report is classified. While the findings of the investigation is unknown, a spokeswoman for the Senate Armed Services Committee said the OIG's investigation did not substantiate allegations of drugging of prisoners for the "purposes of interrogation."

Bush's Interrogators Stressed Nudity

The first of several “specific conditioning interrogation techniques” lists “Nudity. The HVD’s clothes are taken and he remains nude until the interrogators provide clothes to him.” [Underline in original.]

The CIA said the prisoner is kept nude (or occasionally dressed in a diaper) while being subjected to other “conditioning techniques,” sleep deprivation and a bland diet of Ensure. Nudity continues while interrogators apply other more aggressive techniques designed to emphasize a prisoner’s helplessness. The background paper, which was prepared for the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel and released in August 2009 in response to an ACLU lawsuit, described in bureaucratic wording the process used to interrogate a suspected terrorist after his capture and “rendition” to a CIA-run “black site.”

Tony Blair knew of Torture Risk

Papers released to lawyers for six men detained at Guantanamo Bay show that the former Prime Minister was “initially sceptical about claims of torture” but had changed his mind and wanted reassurances from the Americans.

The former detainees, who include Binyam Mohamed, are suing MI5, MI6, the Attorney General, the Home Office and the Foreign Office for alleged complicity in their mistreatment.

They are seeking the release of thousands of documents and yesterday complained to the High Court that the release was too slow and many documents already released have been heavily redacted.

Lawyers ask UK government to release information to assist former UK resident held at Guantanamo

Lawyers acting for a former UK resident, Ahmed Belbacha, have started high court proceedings to force the British government to disclose information that they say could free him from Guantánamo Bay and save his life. According to the legal charity Reprieve and the law firm Leigh Day, Belbacha is in serious danger after a decision by the US courts to lift an injunction preventing his forced transfer to Algeria, where he faces 20 years' imprisonment and the prospect of torture.

They have repeatedly asked the UK government to help by offering him a safe home or disclosing crucial information to his defence team. The UK has repeatedly declined to co-operate, his lawyers say.

"..Massoud himself requires operations because he suffers from problems in his stomach; he underwent one operation, but the second and third remain unperformed... he could not afford them. Thamer Laythi in Egypt fractured his spine and up until now cannot find a wheelchair, and now he is partially paralysed!

Our brothers in Morocco are in need of surgical operations. 90% of former Guantanamo inmates are now unemployed, even though they want to work and are searching for jobs. If their countries are unable to provide for them, they should at least issue them passports with which they can travel elsewhere to find work !.. "
