Omar Deghayes - Guntanamo Justice Centre - Legal Division
Returned from Guantánamo Bay to Britain in December 2007 after a long campaign by his family and supporters "Omar spent six years in prison camps, one at Bagram and the rest at Guantanamo. He was never charged with a crime, had no trial, and his release was spurred on by a Brighton-based campaign.." Omar@guantanamojusticecentre.com
Moazzam Begg - Guantanamo Justice Centre
Moazzam Begg spent just over three years in extra-judicial detention in Guantanamo Bay and other US detention camps. He was subjected to over three hundred interrogations and narrowly avoided being sent to torture camps in Egypt and Libya. " In 2005, he was released without charge, compensation or even an apology and today remains subject to a control order. It is the sort of treatment that could radicalise the most placid of moderates. Yet when I met Moazzam, I found him to be rational, eloquent and, most ironically, a staunch advocate of traditional ‘Western' freedoms" Moazzam@guantanamojusticecentre.com
Sami El Haj - Guantanamo Justice Centre
Sami Al Haj was released from Guantanamo on the 1st May 2008 after a hunger strike which lasted 438 days. "Standing straight and tall, an impressive and deeply introspective man, Sami El Haj walks with a limp and the help of a walking stick. Neither laughter nor smiles light up the refined face of this man, old before his time. A deep sadness pervades him. He was 32 years old when, in December 2001, his life, like that of tens of thousands of other Muslims, became a horrific nightmare. " Sami El Haj, Al Jazeera journalist, tells his story Sami@guantanamojusticecentre.com
